Why I Play Rugby

This is less an article and more a question to the team. I have my own reasons; friends, brotherhood, family, connection, challenge, to teach and learn. What are your reasons? Are you clear as to why you slog it out at training and during a game? Here is a great quote from a non-rugby player who actually (in my opinion ) nailed a lot of what Rugby is about...

Read More "In our country, true teams rarely exist . . . social barriers and personal ambitions have reduced athletes to dissolute cliques or individuals thrown together for mutual profit . . . Yet these rugby players. with their muddied, cracked bodies, are struggling to hold onto a sense of humanity that we in America have lost and are unlikely to regain. The game may only be to move a ball forward on a dirt field, but the task can be accomplished with an unshackled joy and its memories will be a permanent delight. The women and men who play on that rugby field are more alive than too many of us will ever be. The foolish emptiness we think we perceive in their existence is only our own." - Victor Cahn, American professor and playwright.

It helps to know know why I do something, it helps with my motivation. If you know why you play that is great, focus on it every time you lace up your boots. If not thats ok, it takes some people years to figure it out and it can change over time - so get clear now on why you play. Ask if the reasons are strong and have character. Work on it if you have to.

Enjoy your rugby.
