Back Bay vs. UCI Game Notes (1/8/11)

Back Bay faced UCI in their last pre-season match before the start of the 2011 Southern California Division I competition. The Shark’s coaching staff used this match as the last opportunity for players to stamp their spot on the starting XV that will take the pitch against Belmont Shore the following weekend. The match was divided in four 20 minute periods and right from the kick off Back Bay put UCI under a lot of pressure. The Sharks forwards began to take control of the ball early and help provide the backline with enough ball possession to cause scoring opportunities. New flyhalf Ben Jones and Taylor Alston provided a constant flow of communication between the forwards and backs that UCI could not contain. The final score of the first match was 44-7, with the Sharks putting a solid game together.

The second match saw more of the same from the first match. Back Bay maintained the majority of the ball procession and kept UCI under a lot of pressure. The final score of the second match was 41-0. The scores do not show how physical and well coached UCI were during both games. They will be a handful in their upcoming season.

The Sharks came away with two solid wins but head coach Grant Reynolds pointed out that his young Back Bay team has a long way to go and will need to improve to compete in league play. There was a solid effort from multiple players but man of the match honors went to Kimon Tellidis (1st side) and Bodie McNaught (2nd side)
