Back Bay vs. Unicorns Game Notes (2/26/11)

Back Bay returned to action after a two week hiatus due to a bye week and bad weather cancelling a match. After the 2 week break, the sharks took on the Huntington Beach Unicorns. This is a local derby and one of Southern California’s oldest rivalries, needless to say when these two clubs meet it is always a highly contested match.

Both teams went into the game looking for their first win of the year. The Unicorns came out of the gate with strong runs and aggressive play that caught the Sharks by surprise. After 10 minutes of play Back Bay found them selves down 7-0 to a very experienced Unicorn side. With the eye opening try, the Sharks began to control the game with the forward pack. At one point the Sharks were able to control the ball for 20 minutes inside the Huntington Beach 22-meter. To the Unicorns credit, their stellar defense did not allow a tri. At the half, the score was Unicorns 7 – Back Bay 0. Read More
In a case of déjà vu, the second half began with the Unicorns dominating the first 10 minutes of play and Back Bay being surprised by an early try and the Unicorns took a 12-0 lead. From the kickoff the Sharks began showing some potential and began creating some dangerous plays with the backline finally getting on the right page. After constant pressure on the Unicorns’ try line, Tim Hickey was able to dot down for a try and raise the hopes of the Sharks of pulling out a win. But an error soon after the kickoff saw the Unicorns winger score a fabulous kick and chase try in the corner, making the score 17-5. With only 8 minutes left Back Bay began to put more pressure on the home team and after a series of phases Alex Miles broke through for a try making the score 17-12. Unfortunately for the Sharks, time ran out on their comeback bid and the game ended with the Unicorns winning 17-12.
Back Bay 2nd side team returned to their winning ways, as they pounded the Unicorns 40-10. Man of the match honors went to Tim Hickey (1st side) & J.R. Macias (2nd Side). The match was originally schedule to be played at A Street in Newport Beach; however, with heavy rains being predicted for that day, the match was relocated to the Unicorns home pitch in Fountain Valley.
